disabling autoload in modules.conf allows asterisk to start.  I tried clearing out the modules directory and rebulding.  

emerge --info is below:

I noticed that if I load res_monitor.so before res_features.so in modules.conf the issue goes away.

Looks like asterisk 1.2.4 installs a modules.conf that is broken out of the box.

Adding a line to load res_monitor.so in modules.conf fixes the problem.
