Looks like samba included with gentoo has know bug witch affect that way that OSX tiger clients can't connect to server running gentoo and samba. Error message is something like that: [2006/02/01 16:15:47, 0] rpc_parse/parse_prs.c:prs_mem_get(537) prs_mem_get: reading data of size 2 would overrun buffer. When trying to connect using macosx finder and finder also crashes. Solution is to backport fix from 3.2.20 in witch this is fixed. http://lists.backports.org/lurker/message/20051012.075120.c0685bd5.en.html Looks like this bug is in lot of distributions, so sad for OSX tiger owners.. In gentoo you can install newer masked version that fixes problem... (but stable version should work with OSX tiger) -- Eero
Including the patch you named in an already deployed ebuild would cause a change in the ebuild version number (== from samba-3.0.14a-r3 to samba-3.0.14a-r4), which has to be marked as unstable due to Gentoo release policy (www.gentoo.org -> docs -> developer manuals). The same policy states that a "reasonable" amount of time have to pass before the stabilization: usually, this means 30-60 days. Since samba-3.0.21b has been tested in bugzilla since the beginning of January (although released the 2nd of February), I think we could go for the stabilization at the beginning of March. This way, OSX would have compatible servers and clients in about 2 weeks. BTW: 3.0.20* weren't marked as stable because they had some (little, but nasty) stability bugs.
I don't think I've been good at thanking you for pointing out a bug I (and others) didn't know. So, although this bug resolved in a 'wontfix', this was for the presence of better alternatives. :-)
