Firefox can be working fine, and then I will visit a certain type of site (of which there appear to be many) and firefox will hang. I have just discovered that a zombie netstat process will also be created. The status line will often exhibit the URL Firefox is currently trying to retrieve. A common example is http://a.as-us.falkag.net. Typically, the site on which Firefox hangs is typically not the original site requested--there is some sort of redirection going on here. Opera on Gentoo exhibits similar symptoms, but after waiting sufficient time I can regain control of Opera. This is not possible from Firefox. Visting the same sites using Internet Explorer from Windows XP (on the same machine and network setup) does not exhibit this problem.

I've tried this, and initial impressions are good. I will actively use Firefox and see if the problem reappears. The related issue in Opera appears to have disappeared too... Do you know why? What was the thinking behind your suggestion?

I'm afraid I still have the problem. One example site is http://www.ybw.com if that helps. I'm wondering if it is an intermittant problem--I tested fairly comprehensively last night and didn't find any problems.
Here are some additional problem sites: http://www.slashdot.org http://www.firstdirect.com http://www.londonnet.co.uk NB Firefox *does* work in general. I tested each of these yesterday, and everything was fine...
which plugins do you have installed? I noticed your last site has flash which causes a bit of a hang after closing the page but processes does die within in a few seconds.

After a problem-free few weeks, this bug appears to have raised its head again. This issue is *very* intermittent...
This buz appears very similar, however, I am now using PAC, but a manually configured proxy server: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=235853
emerge -C netscape-flash appears to have solved the problem, if that helps.
Have you esd (Gnome's sound daemon) running along with flash? That could be the problem. Try to reproduce the issue opening a site with a flash movie that uses some audio. When it hangs, kill firefox, do a "killall esd && esdctl off" in console, and try opening the same page that provoked the hang in the first place. If it opens without glitches, we've a winner. See also https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/libflash/+bug/302 I found this strace-ing firefox, but it could be a separate bug as well. If so, please tell me and I'll open a new one.
Matteo - I tried your suggestion with both libflash and netscape-flash, but I'm afraid I can't reproduce the problem now. I am now on firefox-1.5.0.4, so this (or upgrades to the flash plugins) may have cured the problem. I have also switched to linux kernel 2.6.16.
Thanks Paul. So that probably was another problem, unrelated to the original bug. I'll keep a look on the Ubuntu bug submission for updates, and if a decision is reached there, I'll open a bug specific for Gentoo with a fix.
