Hi. The rtl8180 driver for many WiNICs present in the portage tree is so old that it doesn't compile with the current kernels. I have D-Link DWL-510 WiFi. I visited rtl8180 webpage, got the CVS source, compiled and everything works very well. For opposition ndiswrapper (with the newest WinXP drivers I found) used to mess up with whole system after 5-30 hours of work. Sometime module' unload and reload was just enough to get it work again but there were situations of completely locking the kernel for some actions (rmmod ndiswrapper last forever, no real reboot after shutting down the system). As far as there are so many RTL8180 based cards and (for me at least) ndiswrapper doesn't seem to work fine with them (I know it is very usefull for some other chipsets and never makes any problem) I think RTL8180 should be tested by the Gentoo-dev team and (finally) considered to be added to the portage tree. Another thing is rtl8180 project is REALLY opensource and there is no need to use any binary driver so the instalation is simplier as well (modulo getting the source via CVS etc, when in portage it should be unconsiderable). Cheers It's my first post here. If I missdid something don't be angry.
Could you specify what are you actually requesting? If that's a live CVS ebuild, then it's WONTFIX. Other than that, it's not really obvious to me.
rtl8180 in portage is stable but doesn't compile with kernels >2.6.12 (not sure for actual version). However manually installing the driver from CVS works. I think rtl8180 is worth having it in the Portage tree since IMHO it is a good piece of software (better than ndiswrapper because it uses open driver, is more stable, easier to use and finally native). If it needs to be released in order to get considered should I request r8180 developer to release a version? And then, will it to be considered to be added to the portage?
(In reply to comment #2) > If it needs to be released in order to get considered should I request r8180 > developer to release a version? And then, will it to be considered to be added > to the portage? Well, there's been no release since 0.21, so really there's nothing to put into portage. CVS snapshot or new release would be really nice, so that we could do something about this actually. ;)
That'd be great :)
I emailed the autor of the rtl8180-sa2400 and asked him wheter he could release a snapshot but I got no answer at all. I would be really happy if someone took care of this piece of driver. Now, it seems that even the author doesn't care :/. I wonder if it is possible to create an ebuild that will get the CVS version via CVS. If in portage, it would be masked of course. Anyways, thank for your help.
