I just got a new Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop. There are known issues regarding APIC support on these laptops, so insuing, the gentoo install kernel lockups after a few minutes after boot. There is a reference here under powermanagement: http://www.whacked.net/ldl/faq and inside the dell-laptops mailing list. In addition after some reading, Dell ships their laptops with modified processors, thus SMP _AND_ APIC support need to be removed from the rescue kernel. Oops, I forgot to mention, that I installed Mandrake 8.1 - minimal install, and created the linux partitions using this. Then mounted the gentoo distro, and chrooted from Mandrake. It appears to be working fine so far. I'm almost to the kernel compile section of the install docs with no lockups.
cool! We'll fix this on our next CD.
I have some bad news for you -- I don't think the -r17 CD has ACPI enabled. I could be wrong, maybe see if you can see anything related to ACPI when the kernel boots.
not ACPI, APIC!
This is fixed in the 1.0 CD.
