Description Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-07 13:41:55 UTC
Hi,

as described in the summary, udev-077 doesn't create devicenodes for USB-drives
after they were plugged in. Last working udev-version was 075.

Cheers
Poly

Is udevd running? You might need to reboot to get this to work properly.
Comment 2 Greg Kroah-Hartman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-07 13:54:05 UTC
And how could 075 work for you, there is no 075 ebuild.
Comment 3 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-07 14:11:09 UTC
Hi,

yes, udev is running. I forgot to mention that I get the devicenodes created
when I run udevstart. But when I then remove the USB-drive the nodes also won't
get deleted. And yes you're right, there is no udev-075 ebuild in portage but
after I had trouble with the latest udev-version I went the versions down step
by step to find out from which version on this error occurs by copying the last
(for me) working ebuild (version 073) in my overlay and renamed it to the
versions 076 and 075. 076 also didn't work but 075 works great and is the
version that I currently run on this machine...

Cheers

Hi,

err sorry, misinformation :-(
The devicesnodes even don't appear after I run udevstart (still had the old
udev-version running when I tested this). So udev-077 doesn't recognize
USB-drives at all...

is udevd running?

and are your usb devices showing up properly in /sys/block/ ? If they aren't
there, then udev can't do anything about it.
Comment 6 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-07 15:02:44 UTC
Hi,

alright... that was the culprit... udevd wasn't runnig. I rebooted my machine
and now it's working again. But that's strange... this means if someone updates
from udev-073 he has to reboot to get udev working properly again. Maybe this is
worth a note in the ebuild?
Anyway... sorry that I wasted your time Greg but I was sure I had found a bug in
udev :-(
