My /var/log/daemon.log began filling up with error messages like this after 
installing samba:

Nov 29 18:05:03 borgy smbd[7244]:   Unable to open printcap file /etc/printcap 
for read!

smbd/service.c:make_connection(252)

service c

for read! 

I haven't yet resolved this problem, but I'm guessing the samba and cups 
ebuilds aren't getting consistent with some file locations...
