Description Philip Kovacs 2005-09-17 14:50:54 UTC
The titlebars under vanilla X are huge when LC_ALL is set to en_US.utf8 (and
possibly others). See this snapshot:

http://home.comcast.net/~phibby/desktop.png

Seems like the icons on the titlebar are broadening the height of the titlebar.

Using LC_ALL "C" and restarting restores the titlebars to their expected width,
as seen here:

http://home.comcast.net/~phibby/desktop.png

I only see this problem using he base xorg-x11 window management system, i.e. I
don't see this problem, for example, under XFCE, my usual desktop.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.export LC_ALL=en_US.utf8
2.startx
3.

the second link above, demonstrating normal titlebars, should be:

Comment 2 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-17 16:58:45 UTC
Did this happen under r3? I'm assuming it did not happen under r2...
Comment 3 Philip Kovacs 2005-09-17 17:27:58 UTC
honestly i don't know. i ran -r3 for only a week or two, i.e. it went stable
and then got pulled out both very recently. i ran -r2 for a long time. i
don't know if this problem existed under -r2, since i so rarely use plain X.
the reason i used it today was because xterm 204 (which came out today as
stable) did not work under XFCE 4.2, so i tried it under plain X. I noticed
this titlebar problem while checking out that xterm 204 (which btw does not run
under XFCE 4.2, but does under plain X, but that's another story).
Comment 4 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-17 20:35:22 UTC
Hmm...if you could give 6.8.99.15 a try it'd be appreciated. This might be a
locale problem in general with X.
Comment 5 Philip Kovacs 2005-09-17 21:32:08 UTC
even if it fixed the problem, i wouldn't run those dev snapshots of X11R7. i am
running x86 here whereever possible. i don't see the problem under XFCE4.2, my
regular desktop. curious to know if this problem is reproducible by anyone.
testing is very easy. just set LC_ALL to a utf8 locale and look at the titlebars.
Comment 6 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-19 18:01:43 UTC
I didn't intend for you to use it permanently. It just tells us if the problem
has been fixed in upcoming versions of X or not.

I haven't been able to reproduce this on modular X.
Comment 7 Philip Kovacs 2005-09-20 13:35:03 UTC
Maybe I will take it to the forums for confirmation from someone who is running
the stable version 6.8.2-r4. If I get confirmation, I'll consider quickpkg'ing
my X installation and then trying the monolithic version 6.8.99.15-r2. I don't
want involved with modular quite yet, although I am looking forward to it.
Comment 8 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-20 15:18:42 UTC
Alright. Please re-open this bug when you have further information :)
Comment 10 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-09-20 20:45:23 UTC
Thanks. Looks like it might be a configuration issue on your part, but I'm sure
you thought of that :)

Let us know how it turns out.
