Description David Cummings 2005-07-12 10:50:14 UTC
The MIPS-Handbook lacks a few details I found neccessary to install Gentoo on an
Origin 2000, ip27 architecture with 8 processors on 4 nodeboards. I feel the
tips I have assembled on the aformentioned page will help others if included or
referenced from the handbook.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Get an ip27 box.
2.Get the handbook.
3.Try to install Gentoo.

Actual Results:
My brain started to hurt.

Expected Results:
Give me aspirin.

It's up to you how much info you want to incorporate directly, I feel the fdisk
stuff is important. I'd be happy to host a prettier version of what I wrote if
you're up to it. Thanks!

Heh, no, you were right the first time. :-) It's a documentation bug after all.

I'll take a look shortly. :-)

Okay... the attached patch re-adds Kumba's section on resizing the partition.

Translators: you may want to dig up the old version of the handbook, very
little has changed, as it's still 90% relevant. I've just changed a few words
here and there.

To step through the guide linked to above...
--> Setting up an nfsroot: No longer necessary. This used to be the case
because of some funkyness regarding embedded ramdisks.	Since moving to
initramfs, this is no longer an issue.	It however was not previously
documented, as O2000 support was still highly experimental at the time when the
guide was (re)written.

--> The fdisk note: The cause is fdisk doesn't create the volume header
correctly. Kumba's instructions on resizing the volume header fix this. It
was taken out as there wasn't a need for it at the time. I have now, however,
re-added it, as it'll be needed with the new bootloader (arcload).

On the TODO list though, is some suitable instructions for arcload. I'll get
to this eventually... just got to sit down and pick a fight with my IP28 at
some point. :-)

Anyways, if a doc dev feels like committing the attached patch, all should be
well.

Regards,
Stuart Longland

Okay, old patch has gone stale... Here's a fresh patch.

Bah, and I'm having a early morning brain malfunction.	Here's one generated
from bleeding-edge CVS.

Fixed in CVS, thanks for the patch.
