On the Fujitsu P2000, 1.4rc1 won't boot because you can't specify boot parameters. 1.3 lets you specify params, but a buggy driver causes other problems later. 1.2 boots correctly on the P2000 though. To be able to boot on the P2000 you need to either have Alan Cox's patch which is in RedHat 8, or you need be able to specify the line linux ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66
This isn't my realm... and the next kernel release will be -ac based... mjc and I are working hard on it... so perhaps the solution is twofold 1) get livecd to allow boot params and 2) using -ac kernel... hopefully both for 1.4?
Hi. First, thanks for the bug report. Please give the "2002122100" iso a try (download at http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/) and post results (good/bad) here. If this RH8 patch is not yet in 2.4.19 (what our current livecd kernel is based on,) we'd like to know about it so that we can add it to our kernel. Thanks very much.
this bug is directly related to the Ali IDE chipset on the P2000. Linux's support for this chipset is a bit buggy in the vanilla build. I was unaware of AC's build having fixed it, but there is a patch available (for 2.4.18 kernels, it patches 2.4.20 with no problems) at: http://www.geocities.com/robm351/lifebook/alim15x3.patch.txt Removing Ali chipset support also works, but that might break other platforms.
I tried both the 2002122100 and (for grins) the 2002122300 iso images. Without the "ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66" boot parameters, neither worked. With the boot parameters, 2002122100 *did* work. For some reason, 2002122300 didn't work even with the boot params. FYI: Michael Leuchtenburg, another P2000 owner, found that 2.4.20-ac2 has the ALi patch applied, as does 2.5.53 and beyond.
Gentoo 1.4rc2 doesn't work with or without ide0=ata66 ide1=ata66, so not only is the required patch missing, but its also still using the broken IDE controller driver.
xfs-sources contains new ide core, should take care of this problem
experimental has ali support
I tried the latest experimental and this is still not working.
