Description Marcelo Goes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-01 09:29:55 UTC
Hello there,

I would like to request a version bump to sys-libs/pam-0.79 and that a prelude USE flag be added. Prelude support can be enabled by passing --enable-prelude to the configure script.

If you have any problems, please get in touch with toady or yoann in Freenode (#prelude).
Comment 1 riskable 2005-05-08 08:52:39 UTC
I would just like to point out that PAM 0.79 also fixes the /etc/nologin bug that prevents root from logging in. Better known as the "Please ignore underlying account module" bug (When you try to login as root it spits out that message).
Comment 2 Dennis Schridde 2005-06-01 08:21:03 UTC
When will this find it's way into the portage tree?
IS there actually a "PAM Gentoo Team"?
Comment 3 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-05 12:52:55 UTC
Yes - I have made some serious time for pam stuff, but want to tackle all the
0.78 issues first, and then I'll get to 0.79.
Comment 4 Aaron 2005-10-13 20:22:21 UTC
version 0.80 is now released.

Comment 5 Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-09 14:57:06 UTC
What prevents you from bumping pam?
We should really have the ne version available in gentoo.
Do you need any help?
Comment 6 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-12-23 03:02:32 UTC
... and version 0.81 's out...
Comment 7 Marcelo Goes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-11 14:21:29 UTC
Can we have a version in package.mask at least?
Comment 8 Aaron 2006-01-21 12:04:51 UTC
now v0.99.3 is out
Comment 9 Mark Felder 2006-04-15 17:12:51 UTC
Can I please get a proper explanation as to of why Gentoo has allowed PAM to fall so far behind? Every distro I can think of at the moment has a much newer pam than we do. We are missing many features because of this (like console.login settings and rlimits, if I remember correctly).

PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. It is TERRIBLE that you have allowed this to fall so far behind.
Comment 10 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-15 17:45:24 UTC
Problem of PAM is that pam requires quite a bit of work to be done, and nobody right now has time to do that.

Myself, I tried to start but there are lots of stuff that requires to be sent upstream, thus I'd have to spend one or two days working on this alone, thing that's quite difficult to me right now, not only because I'm working on Gentoo/FreeBSD, on media-video, on sound, on KDE and so on, but also because I have a real-life paid job to take care of so I can't just "take two days off to work on this" right now.

Of course you're welcome to start nailing down the issues with upstream and prepare ebuilds and stuff, so that the build system is up to gentoo standards :)
Comment 11 Mark Knecht 2006-04-17 17:41:14 UTC
I would like to throw in a request that PAM be updated to pam-0.99 or later. This is apparently required for realtime audio work as when the kernel moves very soon to remove the LSM interface then the realtime-lsm module will no longer work and we'll have to deal with all of this in the heat of the battle.

Thanks!
Comment 12 Mark Knecht 2006-04-17 19:25:02 UTC
It now appears that the real solution to the problem is mainly the upgrade of pam requested in this report:

Comment 13 Ch. Eckert 2006-04-19 16:32:43 UTC
Gentoo is the first distro I really like, especially for my audio work. Currently I'm using a vanilla kernel with RT-LSM module.

As this will be dropped by the kernel hackers, I really need an upgraded PAM package for low latency audio work.

I know time is an issue for all of us, including me, but for me Gentoo always was the Distro where I get recent software packages directly from the repository. If the PAM update could be priorized, I'd really appreciate it.

Please keep on the good work.

Okay I've added an _experimental_ ebuild to portage for 0.99.3.0.
Experimental because there are lots of stuff that has to be added, starting from prelude itself, and dependencies and the rest aren't right yet.
I'll try to use an "agile" method on adding this.

Who dares to try it, feel free to open bugs for specific requests.

I'm tempted of _not_ adding pam_stack.so again.

Another JACK user here, hoping for a replacement for realtime-lsm!
