doh, sorry for the bugspam

It would be wonderful if this were true.  What really happens is it will
download and install the x86 version.  The ebuild needs to be updated so it
supports the amd64 binaries found at 

http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/linuxx86_64soft.html

Please see bug 107023 which adds real amd64 support.
