Description loc 2002-09-18 09:36:44 UTC
I was recommended Gentoo linux by a friend and wanted to install it on my
laptop, but it seems the pcmcia packages (pcmcia_core, ect.) are missing from
the 1.4RC1 LiveCD. In fact the whole /lib/modules/pcmcia/ dir is empty. Would
it be possible for me to aquire these libs and insert them into the 1.4 iso so
i can reburn and install the system after all?

Thanks, loc

Hmmm! I'll need to track down why they're getting zapped. Thanks for the bug report.

Yeah, can confirm this - no PCMCIA stuff at all on the 1.4RC iso. So I can't
really install on my laptop. Is there a workaround for this, so I can get gentoo
on my laptop ;-)
Comment 4 A. Craig West 2002-09-23 17:35:03 UTC
It's possible that pcmcia is built into the livecd kernel, and is not a module.
If that was the case, the documentation would be wrong, but the missing modules
would be correct.
In my case, the livecd kernel oopses trying to load the Compaq SMART2 drivers,
which appears to terminate the initialization on boot, so anything that is
supposed to initialize after that doesn't. I've filed a separate bug for the
oops (Bug 8274)

I get the same oops, and no pcmcia whatsoever
Comment 7 Chad Huneycutt (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-10-21 17:19:52 UTC
Can we get another image out with pcmcia support, please? This is a rather
critical omission.
Comment 8 Jean Jordaan 2002-10-27 08:50:33 UTC
This bug has been biting me too :( I've been trying to work around it by
booting from the 1.2 install iso, so far I haven't successfully completed
a 1.4 install (1.2 installs fine).

It would have been good if someone ( drobbins) would have put the modules
somewhere, so I could fix the CD. Or pointed to the source of the live CD kernel.

I even went to the #gentoo channel, but all I hear is use 1.2 live CD and no
one knows wher the source is. I could not see the source for 2.4.19-xfs-r1 anywhere.
Comment 12 Ian Brandt 2002-11-14 15:19:57 UTC
This is my first time poking around in these sources, but if I have things
correct the build script for the Live CD...

http://cvs.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gentoo-src/livecd/scripts/livecd

...uses the sources from gentoo-sources-2.4.19-r7.ebuild (which I can't seem to
find in CVS, but you could merge them). It then apparently uses this config...

http://cvs.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gentoo-src/livecd/files/config-2.4.19-
gentoo-r7

...which says...

#
# PCMCIA/CardBus support
#
# CONFIG_PCMCIA is not set

...and so us laptop users have to use the 1.2 CD to install 1.4. Now I can't
imagine building another live cd from the tagged sources from the rc1 release
would take all that much time, but unless I'm reading ViewCVS wrong (I've been
stuck primarily using SCCS for a couple years now), they weren't tagged? Is
there a snapshot of the sources used on the server used to build the rc1 CD?
Otherwise any recent changes might mandate a full test before an rc2 with
PCMCIA support could be thrown out there. Either way, I'd be more than happy
to help if someone could get me setup to do so?...

Regards,

Ian

Please please fix this. I wanted to try Gentoo, and because of this bug I can
not install it.
Comment 14 Steven Harms 2002-11-22 20:49:27 UTC
Bug still exists. Why does it take so many months to make a new iso?
Comment 15 Hanno Böck gentoo-dev 2002-11-25 16:09:25 UTC
As a workaround for this bug you can still use the 1.2-install-cd and wget the
stage-tarball for 1.4_rc1.
Comment 16 Ian Brandt 2002-11-25 19:10:02 UTC
Just FYI a forum post/how-to on using the 1.2 CD is here:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=86393#86393

What I don't get is why it's taking so long to get an rc1-r3 with pcmcia
support? This bug is over two months old, and it makes Gentoo look pretty bad
to all your mobile users considering this was dubbed a release candidate. If
throwing out another release involves something more than just rebuilding rc1-
r2 with the corrected kernel config then please fill us in. If it's just a
matter of resources then again, I'd be glad to help if someone could get me
setup to do so.
Comment 17 Daniel Robbins (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-12-10 09:03:14 UTC
Our new experimental 1.4 release beta ISOs should have this fixed. Please test
these isos and let me know if they work for you:

http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/

Any issues you find that are not PCMCIA should get a new bug report. Also, the
ut2003 CD doesn't have any of the X,sound setup stuff yet. The "basic" CD is
identical to the ut2003 CD except with X and ut2003 removed, so it should be an
easy way to test. There is also a 1.4 release beta stage1 tarball in
/mnt/cdroot/gentoo if you're interested....

Oh, please don't post this URI in a prominent place, as these livecds are for
testing purposes only right now. Thanks :)

Comment 19 Ian Brandt 2002-12-12 13:45:05 UTC
The basic CD worked for me. I was able to load the PCMCIA modules per the
install instructions. I connectied to the internet through my PCMCIA network
card. I didn't go any further, as I already have 1.4 installed. I did get a
path not found on net-setup, but I'll file that as a seperate bug.

Regards,

Ian
Comment 20 Ian Brandt 2002-12-12 13:48:36 UTC
Aha, I just noticed there's now a 12/10 iso. My previous comments are in
regard to the 12/9 one. I'll wait to try the 12/10 one before filing a bug for
the command not found on net-setup.

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
