Since updating to tiff-3.7.1 (see Bug 75213) I've noticed that any transparent areas in images render as black. Despite rebuilding both tiff and the applications themselves, transparent TIFFs just do not render correctly. Merging an older version would solve the problem, but I assume that this would again leave systems open to the TIFF vunerability. Is this a general (lib)tiff problem, or something that has been introduced accidentally and is Gentoo-specific?
Not sure at this point; I'll have to do a little research.
No transparency bugs at either Hylafax or the tiff bugzilla sites. Can you post a quick summary of how to reproduce your error, and maybe a problem image? You might want to post a bug at the tiff site as well, or else I will once I have the info from you (I'm right in the middle of several near-term deadlines atm). Thanks in advance.
I came across this bug, when I emerged "x11-wm/windowmaker-0.91.0-r1". The window manager makes use of .tiff icons/images in lots of places which all appear without transparency.
This was what caused me to notice this problem too - I use WindowMaker as my primary WM. I noticed that the icons is the dock no longer had transparency after the tiff upgrade. I confirmed this with eog, which was also unable to display transparent tiffs. I re-emerged tiff and eog (in that order), and the problem was still there. ... so *something* certainly seems broken in the latest libtiff release.

The patch in -r1 seems to work, but I'd like some feedback on it. Please test and let me know the results. Thanks in advance.
Looks good to me - Transparency looks fine, and I've not found any other problems...
