Description jsm 2004-08-03 14:06:53 UTC
When booting from 2004.2 for Ultra64 on my Sunblade 1000 it first loads SILO and immediately afterwards it says:

"fast data mmu miss"

and then goes back to the ok prompt. Note, when I use the Aurora 1.0 install CD on this same machine, I have no problems whatsoever.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Insert Gentoo-Sparc-Universal 2004.2 into Sunblade 1000
2. Watch it boot!
3.

Actual Results:

"fast data mmu miss"

Expected Results:
Run the installer!

I have been trying to install Gentoo on a Sun Fire 280R for the past few days. I have tried the minimal LiveCD's for 1.4, 2004.0, 2004.1, and 2004.2. The problem is not due to installation media because I have burnt the cd's multiple times at regular and slowest speeds. Additionally, the 2004.2 cd that I would preferrably like to install works perfectly on a neighboring Sun Blade.

It is also not due to any hardware issues. I am able to install Solaris just fine, and I am also able to boot practically any other flavor of Linux including Suse, Debian, and Aurora.

Every Gentoo LiveCD generates the following error:

"SILO Fast Data Access MMU Miss"

The only exception is the 2004.1 cd, which actually displays a little more of the SILO banner before the MMU Miss occurs. I'm new to installing Linux on Sparcs but am very acquainted with the installation of Gentoo on the x86 platform. I can provide any information you need so long as you give me instructions on how to do so. =)

I found a solution to the problem from another member of the Gentoo Forums.

As instructed, I downloaded this older version of Gentoo:

http://ftp.hol.gr/mirror/gentoo/releases/build/1.1a/

Then, I swapped cd's with the 2004.2 release and typed this at the Silo prompt:

/boot/gentoo-2.4-smp initrd=/boot/gentoo-2.4-smp.igz root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc looptype=zisofs loop=/zisofs cdroot

Worked like a charm!

Though I could be mistaken because of my lack of familiarity with Sparc and Linux, I believe this is a Silo issue.

I introduced some silo fixes in 2004.3 which has just been released.
A couple of devels tested it on blade 1000's and worked just fine.
If you have problems reopen. Thanks.
