Description Wonko 2011-12-26 14:09:49 UTC
I'm just installing a new x86_64 system, and it failed due to a problem with libggi. When linking, this is part of the command line:
... -L/usr/lib /usr/lib64/libaa.so /usr/bin /usr/sbin /bin /sbin -lm ...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. USE=aalib emerge libggi

Actual Results:
/usr/bin: file not recognized: Is a directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [libggi.la] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/portage/tmp/portage/media-libs/libggi-2.2.2/work/libggi-2.2.2/ggi'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/portage/tmp/portage/media-libs/libggi-2.2.2/work/libggi-2.2.2'
make: *** [all] Error 2

Expected Results:
/usr/bin /usr/sbin /bin /sbin should be no arguments for the linker.

It compiles fine with USE=-aalib. Maybe this is also related to my FEATURES, I did not investigate further.

It seems this bug is not so much related to libggi, as it also happens with pygtksourceview, libiodbc, libwnck and who knows what else. Something is wrong on this system.
Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-12-27 02:38:00 UTC
You could search for the exact string "/usr/bin /usr/sbin /bin /sbin" in /usr/share/pkgconfig/ /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ and /usr/bin/*-config, for starters. Or perhaps search for "PATH".
Comment 4 Wonko 2011-12-27 16:07:53 UTC
Whops, sorry for not closing this invalid bug report - I did not know that I can do this myself, being the reporter.

Jeroen, thanks for the hint. Although it did not help, it looks like a good idea. I had already searched /etc for this, and only found ENV_SUPATH in /etc/login.defs containing the paths /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /bin and /usr/sbin, in reverse order.

But what I forgot was a simple "env | grep '/sbin /bin /usr/sbin /usr/bin'", which finds a 'path' environment variable. It comes from systemrescuecd which I booted from, and is still available in the chroot environment. And the libtool does not clear it first.

Looks like a bug. Where does this libtool script come from, is it autoconf? I guess I should file a bug there.

You should probably simply unset it and thereby clean up the environment.
