I think we should support this device, probably by adding a group rtc and the
appropriate permissions in console.perms, any thoughts ?

------- Comment #1 From Robin Johnson 2004-01-19 16:54:21 0000 -------
most of us already have the device as far as i'm aware.
why do you want to change the ownership/permission on it?

the only reason to change permissions I can see as worthwhile is to allow everybody to read from it.

What do you mean by have ?
The default setup is root.root 620, but, to take advantadge of it, you need at least read permission for the user, and perhaps read/write for rtc members.
I just find it more sensible defaults, but maybe there's some security risk i overlooked (nothing that would prevents having an rtc group anyway).

------- Comment #3 From Stefan de Konink 2004-06-27 13:36:05 0000 -------
mplayer wants to read from this device, so:

/etc/udev/permissions.d/50-udev.permissions:
-misc/rtc:root:root:0660
+misc/rtc:root:root:0664

would allow that. What is the security risk of reading from rtc?

------- Comment #4 From Greg Kroah-Hartman 2004-06-30 16:28:16 0000 -------
should not be a problem, i'll change it for the next version of udev.

------- Comment #5 From Greg Kroah-Hartman 2004-07-02 10:34:59 0000 -------
Fixed, will be in next release, out later today.
