Description Jouni Rinne 2011-05-10 04:42:28 UTC
It seems that with the latest gnome-mplayer/gecko-mediaplayer update to 1.0.3 the old bug #309231 (see comments 11-15) has resurfaced. With gecko-mediaplayer-1.0.3-r1 installed chromium freezes / times out arbitrary on some pages (actually, on *most* pages). Downgrading gecko-mediaplayer to 1.0.0 (compiled with USE="-gnome", of course) allows chromium to work normally.

Glad you found the cause, yes I've had exactly the same issue! The Chromium version I'm using is: 13.0.761.0 (0), and it still isn't resolved.

I've done a couple of experiments on this plugin by enabling and disabling compile flags, and this time I observed the reverse behavior from version 1.0.0. This time, when I compile it with the "gconf" interface enabled, it works a whole lot better. Still I get some freeze ups, but much much less. Since the ebuild had disabled gconf hard this time, I've rewritten the ebuild (see attachment).

When I use attached ebuild with the "gnome" flag enabled, chromium is a whole lot more stable.

The GConf backend is no longer required GSettings (glib/gio) is used instead. In other words, there's no way the attached ebuild will ever get into Portage. You will have to resolve this in Chromium end so it works without GConf, or
contact upstream(s) about it. The only browser I'm testing is Firefox when doing gecko-mediaplayer bumps and that's not changing anytime soon, sorry.

I don't have this problem with Chromium	13.0.764.0 (Developer Build 85237) and gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.3-r1.

I tried with http://www.bfmtv.com/rub/live/14/home/live/ (See upstream bug http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=24507#c68 )

Below emerge --info about gecko-mediaplayer and chromium but I could give additional info if requested.

I am able to reproduce this with chromium-13.0.767.1.
Comment 9 Krellan 2011-05-21 21:15:45 UTC
This used to happen to me with older versions of Chromium, but not recently. I'm now running version 12.0.742.21.

I noticed the blocker was added to the ebuild of gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.3r1, so I will try downgrading to 1.0.0, which doesn't have the blocker.

It's strange that Chromium would hang/freeze in the presence of an unreliable plugin. Wasn't that one of the main features of Chromium, the ability to run plugins in a separate process, so that a bad plugin did not bring down the browser as a whole?
Comment 10 Kevin DeKorte 2011-06-02 17:13:43 UTC
Just wanted to make a comment here about gecko-mediaplayer. I'm the author of the plugin and what is happening with Chrome is that it emulates the g_mainloop, but that emulation is not very good that is why building gecko-mediaplayer with gconf has serious issues. The authors of Chrome know about it and I think it is something they are trying to fix.

I do have Chrome 12.0.724 on my development machine and gecko-mediaplayer with the gsettings backend (default when using gtk 2.26 or higher) does not appear to have any issues.

So at this point my recommendation is to build gecko-mediaplayer without gconf, which means you need to build gnome-mplayer without gconf if you are using gtk < 2.26

Thanks so much for commenting here! Hopefully that'll help fixing the issue.

I'm not sure how actively they're trying. Some upstream bugs you may want to comment on:

Could you post the result of "emerge -1pv www-client/chromium gecko-mediaplayer gnome-mplayer" on your system?

How about removing the potentially dangerous ./configure options completely? I don't fully understand this issue, but it seems that many people may blame gecko-mediaplayer for this issue, which is not necessarily correct.

I'm a Fedora user so I don't have the information you are requesting, but I do look for gecko-mediaplayer/gnome-mplayer bugs outside of the projects bug trackers. I find many people do not bother to report bugs upstream so I do go looking for them. This topic has been discussed on the gecko-mediaplayer mailing list and in the issue tracker

The problem with removing these options is that they are not dangerous to firefox at all. Gconf is a valid backend for storing configuration data, and the plugin is doing nothing illegal. And since when the code is built I have no idea if the code is being used in Firefox (the intended target) or some other browser.

As I have said before the problem is not gecko-mediaplayer as it works correctly under Firefox.

You can read the huge bug report here (73 comments at last check)
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=24507

It appears the problem is becoming more hit and miss with perhaps KDE users seeing the majority of the issues.

My recommendation is you are seeing problems, use the --without-gconf option when configuring gecko-mediaplayer and gnome-mplayer. If you have GTK 2.26 or higher, ensure you have dconf installed as gecko-mediaplayers settings may not be saved otherwise.
Comment 13 Vlastimil Babka (Caster) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-11-11 09:12:12 UTC
When googling for this issue, I found several statements saying that chromium devs themselves have blacklisted this plugin for these reasons. This doesn't seem to case though, as chromium still hangs after I installed gecko-mediaplayer. I don't know if they removed the blacklist meanwhile, or it just doesn't work on Gentoo for some reason, but I would welcome if such blacklist worked and there wouldn't have to be a system-wide blocker as it is now.

Closing as per Comment #15 and Comment #16:

- Use at least chromium 16.* or 17.*
- Use at least gecko-mediaplayer-1.0.5_beta1

Please file a new bug if you still experience problems with said versions.
