I have a working gentoo install on iw wireless-regdb crda for some time now using the p54pci wireless adapter. The networkmanager has as a dependency wireless-tools and not the newer iw, wireless-regdb, crda When I try to use the networkmanager or gnome applet either one my connection becomes unusably unstable. Likely due to calling these tools instead of the newer ones. Which by the way I am unable to make my hardware connect with. In other words I was unable to get a connection on my hardware with wireless-tools (around kernel 2.6.29 iirc) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: .you will need to be using my hardware to re-produce I guess It is an SMC 2802W using the driver p54pci Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: phy0: p54 detected a LM86 firmware Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: phy0: FW rev 2.13.12.0 - Softmac protocol 5.9 Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: phy0: cryptographic accelerator WEP:YES, TKIP:YES, CCMP:YES Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: phy0: hwaddr xx:xx:xx:xx, MAC:isl3890 RF:Duette3 Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: device: 'phy0': device_add Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: PM: Adding info for No Bus:phy0 Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel_ht' Nov 5 17:56:20 random klogd: p54pci 0000:00:0a.0: is registered as 'phy0' Nov 6 22:04:36 random klogd: ieee80211 phy0: legacy class suspend Nov 6 22:04:37 random klogd: ieee80211 phy0: legacy class resume andom david # emerge --info Portage 2.1.9.24 (default/linux/amd64/10.0, gcc-4.4.5, glibc-2.12.1-r3, 2.6.36-gentoo x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.36-gentoo-x86_64-AMD_Athlon-tm-_64_Processor_3200+-with-gentoo-2.0.1 Timestamp of tree: Thu, 11 Nov 2010 03:45:02 +0000 app-shells/bash: 4.1_p9 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.11-r2 dev-lang/python: 2.6.6-r1, 3.1.2-r4 dev-util/cmake: 2.8.1-r2 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.1-r1 sys-apps/openrc: 0.6.3 sys-apps/sandbox: 2.3-r1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.68 sys-devel/automake: 1.10.3, 1.11.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.20.1-r1 sys-devel/gcc: 4.4.5 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.1 sys-devel/libtool: 2.4 sys-devel/make: 3.82 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.35 (sys-kernel/linux-headers) ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" ACCEPT_LICENSE="*" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /etc/portage/" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="assume-digests binpkg-logs buildpkg distlocks fixlafiles fixpackages multilib-strict news parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unknown-features-warn unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo/ ftp://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ http://mirrors.163.com/gentoo/ ftp://mirror.bih.net.ba/gentoo/" LANG="C" LDFLAGS="-Wl,--hash-style=gnu,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed" LINGUAS="en_US" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY=" " SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="acl alsa amd64 berkdb bzip2 cdr cli cracklib crypt cups cxx dri en fortran gdbm gpm gtk iconv ipv6 midi mmx modules mudflap multilib ncurses nls nptl nptlonly openmp pam pcre perl pic pppd python readline session sse sse2 ssl sysfs tcpd threads unicode xorg zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache cgi cgid dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" COLLECTD_PLUGINS="df interface irq load memory rrdtool swap syslog" ELIBC="glibc" GPSD_PROTOCOLS="ashtech aivdm earthmate evermore fv18 garmin garmintxt gpsclock itrax mtk3301 nmea ntrip navcom oceanserver oldstyle oncore rtcm104v2 rtcm104v3 sirf superstar2 timing tsip tripmate tnt ubx" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="en_US" PHP_TARGETS="php5-2" RUBY_TARGETS="ruby18 ree18" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia vesa nouveau" XTABLES_ADDONS="quota2 psd pknock lscan length2 ipv4options ipset ipp2p iface geoip fuzzy condition tee tarpit sysrq steal rawnat logmark ipmark dhcpmac delude chaos account" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LC_ALL, MAKEOPTS, PORTAGE_BUNZIP2_COMMAND, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS random david #
When discussing this with one of the developers of the connman application via mailing list one remark was the driver might not be fully supported by kernel. I have used this device to connect/sync/use Gentoo since early last year. It is said if 'iw wlan0 scan' works properly your card is supported. random david # iw wlan0 scan BSS 00:1c:10:9c:32:87 (on wlan0) -- associated TSF: 976537958787 usec (11d, 07:15:37) freq: 2437 beacon interval: 50 capability: ESS Privacy ShortSlotTime (0x0411) signal: 20351.00 dBm last seen: 76 ms ago Information elements from Probe Response frame: SSID: Davespace Supported rates: 1.0* 2.0* 5.5* 11.0* 18.0 24.0 36.0 54.0 DS Parameter set: channel 6 ERP: Barker_Preamble_Mode RSN: * Version: 1 * Group cipher: TKIP * Pairwise ciphers: CCMP TKIP * Authentication suites: PSK * Capabilities: (0x0000) Extended supported rates: 6.0 9.0 12.0 48.0 WPA: * Version: 1 * Group cipher: TKIP * Pairwise ciphers: CCMP TKIP * Authentication suites: PSK * Capabilities: (0x0000) BSS c0:3f:0e:1e:78:64 (on wlan0) TSF: 1300691251601 usec (15d, 01:18:11) freq: 2462 beacon interval: 100 capability: ESS Privacy ShortSlotTime (0x0411) signal: 20351.00 dBm last seen: 50 ms ago SSID: NormaK Supported rates: 1.0* 2.0* 5.5 11.0 18.0 24.0 36.0 54.0 DS Parameter set: channel 11 TIM: DTIM Count 2 DTIM Period 3 Bitmap Control 0x0 Bitmap[0] 0x0 ERP: <no flags> RSN: * Version: 1 * Group cipher: TKIP * Pairwise ciphers: CCMP TKIP * Authentication suites: PSK * Capabilities: 16-PTKSA-RC (0x000c) Extended supported rates: 6.0 9.0 12.0 48.0 WPS: * Version: 1.0 * Wi-Fi Protected Setup State: 2 (Configured) WPA: * Version: 1 * Group cipher: TKIP * Pairwise ciphers: CCMP TKIP * Authentication suites: PSK * Capabilities: 16-PTKSA-RC (0x000c) WMM: * Parameter version 1 * u-APSD * BE: CW 15-1023, AIFSN 3 * BK: CW 15-1023, AIFSN 7 * VI: CW 7-15, AIFSN 2, TXOP 3008 usec * VO: CW 3-7, AIFSN 2, TXOP 1504 usec I am also using this setup with another system and wireless-tools nor networkmanager would work with them. it is a 32 bit stable P3 with usb 1.0 only and running a Netgear WNA1100 As currently stated in the wireless setup of Gentoo's Handbook I could get neither of the cards to work with a current kernel. Just a bump though I know a lot of work is going on here. ;-)
Looks like networkmanager-0.9.6.0 doesn't depend on it
networkmanager-0.9.4.0-r7 is stable and doesn't depend on wireless-tools either. closing, please reopen if I'm missing something obvious
