Description Richard 2010-09-06 00:26:13 UTC
I have an amd64 desktop that was running KDE 4.4.5. After reading a report that the issues in KDE 4.5.x were because of open source graphics drivers and that nvidia's proprietary drivers were unaffected, I decided to upgrade to KDE 4.5.1. During this upgrade, 3 packages died consecutively. They possibly occurred simultaneously, but I was not watching the terminal when the failure occurred. These packages were dev-db/virtuoso-odbc-6.1.2, app-admin/system-config-printer-common-1.2.4 and sci-libs/clapack-3.2.1-r3.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
Upgrade a production kde 4.4.5 system with nvidia drivers to KDE 4.5.1, although there is no guarantee of a failure.

clapack-3.2.1-r3 was at ">>> Source configured." in its config.log before the error.
app-admin/system-config-printer-common-1.2.4 was at ">>> Source prepared." in its config.log before the error.
dev-db/virtuoso-odbc-6.1.2 did not display this error.

The logs were mostly lost, because I did not realize that there was any useful information in them until after I restarted the emerge. Restarting the emerge had the packages build without a problem. I have salvaged what I could from konsole and I will attach it shortly. Here is my emerge --info:

Comment 4 Richard 2010-09-06 00:38:54 UTC
I forgot to mention in #3, I had stopped the emerge after dev-libs/redland-1.0.10-r2 installed and re-ran it manually, after which, the 3 packages compiled and installed without issue.

I notice that the ipc-timer was introduced because of bug #335777. I have a quad-core processor and 8GB of RAM, so I like to do massive emerges where many, many threads are competing for CPU time, which could foreseeably keep packages in limbo for 40 seconds or more. Is it possible that doing that caused portage to detect false positives and kill the packages thinking that they somehow became orphaned?

build.log from kde-base/systemsettings-4.5.1 failure

This one failed after the other 5.

What the terminal window where I ran the build command has in it.

I let the build keep going while I documented everything. Here is what was shown in the build window.

Install times as shown by genlop

I am probably going overboard on documentation of this failure, but I want to make sure that I capture more information this time.
Comment 13 Richard 2010-09-09 21:03:23 UTC
kde 4.5.1's use flags changed, so I re-built kde 4.5.1 on my system. I just had a similar string of failures, except with different packages:

>>> Failed to emerge kde-base/kigo-4.5.1, Log file:
>>>  '/var/tmp/portage/kde-base/kigo-4.5.1/temp/build.log'
>>> Failed to emerge kde-base/kreversi-4.5.1, Log file:
>>>  '/var/tmp/portage/kde-base/kreversi-4.5.1/temp/build.log'
>>> Installing (99 of 116) kde-base/kapman-4.5.1
>>> Failed to emerge kde-base/kblackbox-4.5.1, Log file:
>>>  '/var/tmp/portage/kde-base/kblackbox-4.5.1/temp/build.log'
>>> Failed to emerge kde-base/kollision-4.5.1, Log file:
>>>  '/var/tmp/portage/kde-base/kollision-4.5.1/temp/build.log'

The odd thing is just how succinct these failures are. With 3 of them, failures are occurring before anything has really been done.

Could you tell us whether were you doing a world update at the moment? Have you installed portage-2.1.9 earlier or within the same update?

This seems like a mid-update problem or one of the 2.1.9 bugs. Let's see what Zac can tell but I think we can't do anything unless you're able to reproduce it.
Comment 16 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2010-09-11 18:34:15 UTC
If it's not reproducible with portage-2.1.9.3 version then let's just assume it's already fixed. Changes related to bug 336644 may have helped.

If it is reproducible then there must be something exotic about your system that's triggering it. Do you have anything special about your configuration?

This was a world update. According to "genlop -t portage" I had installed portage 2.1.9 two days prior to t his.
Comment 18 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2010-09-11 21:52:36 UTC
The only recent "mid-update" problems that I know of were with portage-9999, and that should be fix now. However, people who have portage-9999 installs older than a few weeks may still have issues upgrading portage-9999 and there's not much that can be done about that aside from downgrading to a normal version.

There is nothing particularly special about my configuration. I just did some more updates and none of them failed. Unfortunately, this issue seems to only occur with large updates. I will try doing an "emerge -e world" overnight to see if I can still reproduce it.

increase the ipc timeout

This increases the timeout from 40 seconds to 400 seconds. However, normally the operation should only take milliseconds, so something is extremely odd if it's taking more than 40 seconds.
Comment 21 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2010-09-13 02:27:00 UTC
I've increased the timeout to 15 minutes:

http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/portage.git;a=commit;h=a96ae43f6e78c1a8629805a29d188f50196d19ed

This is in 2.1.9.5 and 2.2_rc81. Please re-open if you still have problems. I now realize that there are a couple of relatively normal use cases that could have easily caused the 40 second timeout to be exceeded:

1) Looking up owners of installed files after a file collision.
2) Waiting for a /var/db/pkg lock that is held by another emerge process (only happens if you run emerge more than once at the same time).

These issues are fixed in git:

Now there's support for indefinite retries, as long as the parent process has the build directory locked:

Failure in =x11-libs/libgksu-2.0.12-r1 with sys-apps/portage-2.1.9.11

I just had a build failure on my ~x86 laptop when running "emerge --jobs --keep-going -ave @world". My laptop managed to compile 1033 packages before the failure, which suggests that things are much better now.

After seeing the failure message, it occurred to me why this is happening. I have the following set in make.conf:

PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND="ionice -c 3 -p \${PID}"

PORTAGE_NICENESS="19"

For some reason, the values of these settings do not appear in emerge --info. Anyway, the slow reads are likely because of PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND being set. I wanted my system to be usable during compilation, so I have it set, but it seems that it is the cause of the problems.
Comment 28 Richard 2010-09-28 10:14:20 UTC
I forgot to mention. I have these settings set on my desktop as well. Unfortunately, it is easy to forget about them. My apologies for not remembering that they were set earlier.

The log shows it retrying, not a failure. It's supposed to retry indefinitely. So, are you saying that it appeared to stop retrying after 45 seconds and just hung there?

That would seem to be the case. Portage treated it as a failure and resumed the emerge with it omitted.

By the way, I am trying to confirm that this issue only occurs when PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND is set. I have commented PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND in my /etc/make.conf file and I am running "emerge -ave --jobs --keep-going --exclude "dev-util/nvidia-cuda-sdk" @world" on my desktop. Since it is building in a tmpfs, it should not need PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND, but I had it set from when I had less RAM. The tmpfs size is 14GB, with 8GB of RAM and 8GB of swap. If this emerge runs without any ebuild-ipc issues, I will rerun it with PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND to verify that it does fail with PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND set in the latest version of portage. I started the rebuild on my laptop before sys-apps/portage-2.1.9.12 had become available. My desktop's CPU is roughly 3 times faster than my laptop's CPU, so the results of the first build should be available by the time I arrive home this evening.

So, it didn't hang, and the build terminated somehow. Is there a message for this package in /var/log/portage/elog/summary.log that gives more information about the reason for build termination?

I just checked the kernel log. It looks like the build failed because of a bug in libc, which is not a portage bug:
