Having to debug something doesn't mean I want to totally break other random stuff which happens to be using this library. After much scratching of my head by some sheer luck I managed to find Bug 286845 (which doesn't mention apr anywhere in the summary BTW.) Also it's nice that we have self-documenting USE flags such as  older-kernels-compatibility and urandom documented in metadata.xml but there's zero mention about USE=debug producing borkage all across the place. Totally agree with Bug 28684 Comment #8 

(Oh, and this reminds me the same undocumented nonsense still exists in app-editors/nano - http://tinyurl.com/yhzgb4z)

the debug use flag has been removed. apr pool debug can be enabled via econf_extra. thanks for reporting
