get_iplayer is a utility for downloading TV shows from the BBC's portal.

These shows are also available streaming via http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ however the quality is lower (below standard definition) and you may need to install the BBC's Linux client, which depends upon Adobe Air and which is offered as RPM / Debian binaries for Fedora, Ubuntu & Suse.
For more details of the official client see:
- http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/download_programmes/desktop_linux

get_iplayer is a much simpler CLI script (although it seems quite comprehensive in its features) and it also downloads higher-quality versions (HD 720p H.264 / MP4 ???) of the shows than are available from the BBC's web-portal. AFAICT these are the version that the BBC also serve to the iPhone, because that doesn't support Flash / Air / whatever. Because they are standard .MP4s you can play the downloads in your video player of choice - mplayer or whatever.

ewanm89 has an overlay carrying a few ebuilds for get_iplayer, but they are much out of date - latest is release 1.16, last modified 2009-01-09.

The get_iplayer main site has made many releases - I guess over 2 dozen - since then, now at 2.49.

Hello, The Gentoo Team would like to firstly thank you for your ebuild
submission. We also apologize for not being able to accommodate you in a timely
manner. There are simply too many new packages.

Allow me to use this opportunity to introduce you to Gentoo Sunrise. The
sunrise overlay[1] is a overlay for Gentoo which we allow trusted users to
commit to and all users can have ebuilds reviewed by Gentoo devs for entry
into the overlay. So, the sunrise team is suggesting that you look into this
and submit your ebuild to the overlay where even *you* can commit to. =)

Thanks,
On behalf of the Gentoo Sunrise Team,
Justin.

Ebuild for version 3.00

As project Sunrise has gone, I am attaching an updated ebuild for this package here. This updates for version 3.00 with some significant dependency changes.

Release notes are here: https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/release300

Tested on x86 and amd64 stable systems.

You may wish to push this to the 'guru' overlay where new ebuilds are given an evaluation period before being 'admitted' to the main repository.

Obviously there is a procedure for this, and you should be able to gain access through the proxy-maintainers project[0].
