I should add that recompilation of ivman-0.6.14 with libxml2-2.7.3 installed does not solve the problem.

Is the ivman daemon even running? What if you start it from the command line and without backgrounding/daemonising.

I can confirm this. Ivman with the libxml2-2.7.3 does work when starting up (if checkOnInit is present in IvmConfigActions), but doesn't do anything after that. And yes, downgrading to an earlier libxml2 made it work perfectly for me too (without needing to recompile ivman)
Confirmed. Downgrading libxml2 to 2.7.2 version fixes ivman.
Hell! I was doing unimaginable things to try ivman get work until I found this report. Downgrading libxml2 to 2.7.2-r2 worked for me. To the solution: ivman last version 0.6.14 is from Feb 5 2007. It might be hard to solve this bug if there is no newer version nor recent development history, but still I think what we have to do is compare sources of libxml2 between version 2.7.2-r2 and 2.7.3. If nobody touches this I would, but with no guaranees.

I was also bitten by this bug (in an ugly way because backup on removable media relies on it being mounted at some point :-P ). While trying to resolve the bug I found this debian bug report, which describes the same erroneous behaviour of ivman-0.6.14: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=521325 Therefore, the problem does not appear to be gentoo-specific.
Forgot to mention: Downgrading libxml2 to 2.7.2-r2 fixed the problem for me.
Today libxml-2.7.3-r1 was released for Gentoo which does not fix the problem.
I can confirm this bug on AMD64.
In the mean time, the last version of libxml2 (2.7.2-r2) known to work with ivman was removed from the portage tree - causing no end of pain at this end. "Creative googling" turned up sys-apps/halevt as a possible replacement for ivman; after fiddling the configuration this WORKSFORME(tm). As ivman (stable 0.6.14 in the portage tree) does not work with the only stable version of libxml2 (2.7.3-r2) in the tree, I hereby move that: sys-apps/ivman be HARDMASKED with a comment pointing users to halevt: ---------------------------------------------------------- # sys-apps/ivman depends on a version of libxml2 # which is no longer available.
