Google Earth is showing all text as boxes in the UI and in the 3D view. This makes the app unusuable. Reproducible: Always

The funny thing is when I start Xorg with the vesa-driver, it displays the text normally, but the 3D is unusable.
Any news? http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=schermatakg9.jpg Google earth is useless in my gentoo ...
Same in google earth 5.0.11337.1968 beta http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/8370/schermataqu8.jpg
FIX: rename (path of GE in my system is /opt/google-earth/ ) /opt/google-earth/libQtCore.so.4 /opt/google-earth/_libQtCore.so.4 and /opt/google-earth/libQtGui.so.4 /opt/google-earth/_libQtGui.so.4 then GE work fine with the system libQt and libQtGUI For GoogleEarth 5 beta also rename /opt/google-earth/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 /opt/google-earth/_libcrypto.so.0.9.8 screenshot http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7104/ge5kh9.jpg
(In reply to comment #12) This is not useful for anyone who doesn't have Qt installed. Also I don't think this will work for AMD64 users either because it doesn't seem like app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs provides the required libraries.
It's rather odd that this is a Qt specific rendering issue. I'd always assumed it was an intel graphics card issue (since it started going wrong just as the TTM stuff got taken out of the kernel)...

You have to specify your fonts paths in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf See here: http://forum.sabayonlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=15638&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a Works now for me.

ok, the fonts-workaround seems to work for me somehow. I'm on a gentoo ~x86 with the radeon-video-driver. I have _no_ specific type1-fonts or bitmap-fonts installed on my system. there is only the package "media-fonts/font-misc-misc" which I believe does install some bitmap-fonts. I tried out following: 1. add Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/corefonts" EndSection to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart Xorg 2. try out googleearth which is displaying the fonts correctly 3. remove the "Section Files" from xorg.conf and restart Xorg 4. try out googleearth which is _still_ displaying the fonts correctly I think somehow that googleearth creates somewhere a fonts-cache when they are specified in xorg.conf, but I don't know where. btw, here my "normal" xorg.conf: #googleearth workaround #Section "Files" # FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" # FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/" # FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/" # FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/corefonts" #EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Ati Radeon" Driver "radeon" Option "EnablePageFlip" "True" Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" Option "BackingStore" "true" EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "evdev" Option "Device" "/dev/input/event4" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "evdev" Option "XkbLayout" "ch" EndSection Section "dri" Mode 0666 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen 0" Device "Ati Radeon" DefaultDepth 24 EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Simple Layout" Screen "Screen 0" Option "AIGLX" "true" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection
I had a similar problem. In the UI, but NOT in the 3D-View, it seemed to use another language (something like chinese or so :D) This problem only appeared when using googleearth within kde-4! Using fluxbox was no problem. And guess, it also was a font problem. googleearth has chosen the first available font, in alphabetically order. That was Alchemy on my system, which consists of symbols like zodiac signs and so on. If googleearth would chose a greater font size and antialiasing, i would have recognized some symbols earlier. Now it uses "Andale Mono", which isn't perfect eather, but i at least can read the letters. Somebody knows, how i can set the font in googleearth?

This issue due to bug 212373. Remove all qt4 related stuff bundled with GoogleEarth (on amd64 install emul-linux-x86-qt4libs - bug 259649 ).
googleearth-5.1.3533.1731-r1 now unbundles qt4 (unless qt-bundled flag is enabled) please test if that works (sync, reemerge and don't enable the flag)
> please test if that works (sync, reemerge and don't enable the flag) > here on amd64, it works! thanks
