All broken mail-notification ebuilds have been removed from CVS on Oct 23rd.
Please emerge --sync and try to use mail-notification-5.4, as this is now the
only supported version.

Ha! I see that I removed those ebuilds on Oct 23rd, but that I never committed
this to CVS. Bad Hans! 

I've now committed this, so the request to use mail-notification-5.4 still
stands.
