You probably need to remove kde-4.1 from /var/lib/portage/world_sets.
We can add support to correct problems like this with `emaint --fix world` and advise the user that they need to run it in cases like this.

emerge -upvD world emerge: the given set 'world' contains a non-existent set named 'kde'. Removing kde set from /var/lib/portage/world_sets solved problem but there wasn't any message from emerge what I should do.
I just stumbled over a similar problem: emerge: the given set 'world' contains a non-existent set named ''. seemingly there wasn't anything wrong with world or world_sets fortunately "emaint --fix world" cured it :)
