Thanks for reporting this QA issue, assigning to maintainers.

Thanks, I've removed the $(use_enable debug) call from econf, as all it does is
force -O0 and some other CFLAGS stuff - for that you'd tweak your own CFLAGS
instead of USE=debug. It also enabled a preprocessor macro ENABLE_DEBUG whose
intention is documented to "enable runtime validity checks", but ignoring that
as nowhere in the codebase is that macro used.
