Description Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-15 18:26:27 UTC
kdelibs-3.5.10 fails to provide kartsserver.h causing other ebuilds to fail, specifically kdemultimedia-arts which is required by numerous kde packages. Furthermore, even after emerging most of kde 3.5.10, I still get no sound.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-15 18:42:56 UTC
In fact kdelibs doesn't build arts libraries at all, /usr/kde/3.5/lib64/libartskde.la, /usr/kde/3.5/lib64/libartskde.so, /usr/kde/3.5/lib64/libartskde.so.1, /usr/kde/3.5/lib64/libartskde.so.1.2.0 are all missing leading to Many problems.
Comment 2 Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-15 19:37:56 UTC
Just to help a little more if I can, here is what the configure part says in the beginning of the emerg. If you notice it says both --with-arts and farther down --without-arts.

* econf: updating kdelibs-3.5.10/admin/config.sub with /usr/share/gnuconfig/config.sub
./configure --prefix=/usr --host=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --with-distribution=Gentoo --disable-fast-malloc --with-libart --with-libidn --with-ssl --without-hspell --enable-libfam --enable-dnotify --with-acl --with-alsa --with-arts --enable-cups --with-gssapi --with-tiff --with-jasper --with-openexr --with-utempter --without-lua --enable-sendfile --enable-mitshm --with-aspell --disable-dnssd --with-rgbfile=/usr/share/X11/rgb.txt --with-qt-dir=/usr/qt/3 --enable-mt --with-qt-libraries=/usr/qt/3/lib64 --disable-dependency-tracking --disable-debug --without-debug --without-arts --enable-gcc-hidden-visibility --prefix=/usr/kde/3.5 --mandir=/usr/kde/3.5/share/man --infodir=/usr/kde/3.5/share/info --datadir=/usr/kde/3.5/share --sysconfdir=/usr/kde/3.5/etc --enable-libsuffix=64 --libdir=/usr/kde/3.5/lib64 --build=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

Tracked down that one. An update in the kde.eclass is to blame. There's some ARTS_REQUIRED variable that gets set to "never" in line 37 because kdelibs is not listet in the two cases above. And that causes the '--without-arts' further down at line 286.
Comment 4 Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-15 22:43:32 UTC
That's the problem I guess. It's my understanding that the later use call always overrides the earlier one therefore, even if we have the arts use flag set and it calls for it during the compile, it gets overridden by the later configure option. Is there a way to force it? I have been playing with the ebuild this afternoon to no avail.

kdelibs-3.5.10 and kde.eclass for an overlay

Okay, I have a temporary fix, insert this ebuild (same as from portage but eliminated extra versions) and modified eclass inton an overlay, emerge =kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.10, then you will need to reemerge all kde 3.5.10 ebuilds that use the arts flag to be certain everything is emerged correctly. This will allow us to emerge kde-3.5.10 for now until the developers find the correct fix. All this does is force the arts flag when emerging kdelibs, nothing more.
Comment 6 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2008-09-16 01:48:53 UTC
Here's just the core change you need (plus a revision bump to kdelibs and updating all the deps to pull that the new rev).

Comment 8 Roby 2008-09-17 17:20:59 UTC
I did this before emerging kde-meta:
emerge -C1 kdemultimedia-arts

Then, uninstall all arts-related packages (arts, artsplugin*)

Then:
USE="-arts" emerge -va1 kde-meta

It seems to work.

I used your ebuild and everything worked fine. (~x86)
Comment 10 Billy DeVincentis 2008-09-18 12:13:33 UTC
Andreas, my ebuild isn't any different than the one in portage, it's just that by putting it into an overlay you are only forcing different install options on that single version of kdelibs, its the kde.eclass that's different.
