After booting the livecd either with or without framebuffer, X fails to initialize and presents me the possibility to read the log. The laptop can run X flawlessly, but not this version of X, apparently. This release is not the only one I encountered these problems with, but it is the first time i could take the time to tap in the errorlog because in other distros the xserver seemed to come in a loop and all i could do is reset the machine.. Laptop is a pentium4 2.6Ghz with 512MB ram, a 60 GB hdd and ethernet. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.insert medium and boot Actual Results: Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" (II)Module already built-in (II)Module already built-in (II)Module already built-in (EE) intel(0): detecting sil164 (EE) intel(0):Unable to read from DVOI2C_E Slave 112 (EE) intel(0):Unable to read from DVOI2C_E Slave 236 (EE) intel(0):ivch: Unable to read register 0x00 from DVOI2C_B:04 (EE) intel(0):Unable to read from DVOI2C_E Slave 112 (EE) intel(0):tfp410 not detetcted got VID FFFFFFFF: from DVOI2C_E Slave (EE) intel(0):No valid modes. Please post/attach the following files: /etc/sysconfig/xserver /etc/X11/xorg.conf /var/log/Xorg.0.log Also, please give the output of lspci (not lspci -v, please). You should be able to get into X by starting the CD/DVD with "nox" and then running: X -configure && mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11 && gdm
(In reply to comment #1) Hi, after running "X -configure && mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11 && gdm" the xserver seems to go into the loop and i cannot get it out anymore; tried ctrl+alt+backspace or switching to virtual terminal. No effect. Now resetting machine. I will post the outputs you requested when i can.

Oops! It should have been: X -configure && mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf && gdm
(In reply to comment #8) > Oops! It should have been: > > X -configure && mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf && gdm > Tried that today, and the xserver fails with same error and log. If it is helpful to you i can provide you with the logs or run more tests.
OK, we've got 2008.0 Beta 2 out now, could you try it and see if anything changes?
(In reply to comment #10) > OK, we've got 2008.0 Beta 2 out now, could you try it and see if anything > changes? > Ok i will do that. Thanks for drawing my attention to it. I will be back here with the results.
(In reply to comment #10) > OK, we've got 2008.0 Beta 2 out now, could you try it and see if anything > changes? Ok i have the dvd for i686 arch because the cd was 838.2 MB big and did not fit onto a stock medium (and my 900MB media weren't recognized by my software). Changes are that my networkinterface is not recognized at boot time. The module seems not to be loaded because i cant get it to work with net-setup either. Furthermore alsasound fails to load now with the intelchipset driver. Errormessages concerning X are pretty much the same, only sil164 is now detected. As i fail to load the network i can't post the errormessages here now due to lack of time.
Got the same behavior on my machine. Has anyone tried this with the just-released 2008.0 stuff?
To be exactly, I got this error not using a LiveCD. I installed a regular Gentoo Linux (See emerge --info). For evaluation reasons I will download Gentoo 2008.0 LiveCD and then I will give feedback.
Can you guys (the x11 team) shed some light on this?
Looks like you're running 2.1.1, that's pretty old although it is still the latest stable. For those of you not on the LiveCD, it would be worth testing the latest ~x86/~amd64 driver. Rèmi maintains the intel driver so I'm cc'ing him instead.

(In reply to comment #15) > Has anyone tried this with the just-released 2008.0 stuff? > Yes tried this. Livecd boots up nicely until the part where X is initialized. There the bootprocess seems not to continue.
X log says you have a monitor connected to the VGA port. If so, please try without it. If not, then I guess it's just bad luck. 2.1.1 is _ancient_ in Intel driver history. I guess we should have put 2.2 or 2.3 as stable but it needs a more recent xorg-server for better HW support (a lot of HW related stuff such as VT switching is handled by the server without any help of the drivers...). So either we stick with xserver 1.3 + i810 2.1.1 or we go to 1.4.2 with i810 2.3.2. Any other solution is just bound to get users into more trouble. I'm sure this is not what you wanted to hear...

I am the maintainer of the driver, and I am in contact with the developers :) There are a couple problems : 1) 2.1.1 is old, 2.2.1 is much better, and 2.3.2 is even better. 2) xorg-server 1.3 is old, and plagued with various little bugs and quirks 3) no one is interested in 1.3 anymore, it's dead 4) nobody really tests new drivers with old servers or vice versa The only viable option in the long run is to stabilize xorg-server 1.4.2 with xf86-video-i810 2.3.2. That's just about it.

Please let me know, i do have a bit of time and like solving this problem. By the way, is it possible the driver does also affect the audiopart of the chipset?
(In reply to comment #25) > So into the process of stabilizing this combo you speak of, can i be of help > testing? Just read the Gentoo Handbook on how to unmask packages and update to xorg-server 1.4.2 and xf86-driver-i810 2.3.2. That's about it :) As for the stabilizing itself, it's a current work in progress. It should be done within a few weeks maybe. > Do you have such hardware yourself? I have a laptop with an 855GM chipset. So far, most of the bugs that have been reported to Gentoo have been solved. You'll have to open a new bug assigned to the correct team if you have sound issues. Thanks

So far, most of the bugs that have been > reported to Gentoo have been solved. It's a really stable combination. Ok thank you very much. I have primarily reported this bug for the installer cd. This leaves me installing via minimal as an only choice now for my lappy. Is it safe to assume the next installercd will have the stable driver and version of X? (given a positive outcome of your testing of course...) Kind regards Martijn Rowaan
(In reply to comment #27) > Is it safe to assume the next installercd will have the stable driver and > version of X? (given a positive outcome of your testing of course...) I sincerely hope so. I'm not very happy about us shipping such an old X11 stack, but given the circumstances, it's the best we could do. Thanks

Now i cannot use the installer and have to either fall back on the 2007 installercd or use the minimal instead. But that might be the biased perspective an end-user could have and i can visualize that quite clearly. ;-)
