from /var/log/messages (with /etc/conf.d/rc set to verbose=no and parallel=yes)"/etc/init.d/rsyncd[4073]: start-stop-daemon: /usr/bin/rsync died" next line says "/etc/init.d/rsyncd[4044]: ERROR: rsyncd failed to start" I only get this error with the parallel=yes setting on. It reports this both on the console when booting and gives the above output in the log. emerge --info : 'Portage 2.1.2.12 (default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.5-r4, 2.6 .22-gentoo-r5 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.22-gentoo-r5 i686 AMD Sempron(tm) 2800+ Gentoo Base System release 2.0.0_rc4-r1 Timestamp of tree: Tue, 11 Sep 2007 06:20:01 +0000 distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disable d] ccache version 2.4 [enabled] app-shells/bash: 3.2_p17 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.0.33-r1 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r4 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r7 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.0_rc4-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.16 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.24 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.21 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -finline-functions -mfpm ath=sse" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shu tdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -finline-functions -mf pmath=sse" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="ccache distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms stri ct userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ ftp://lug.mtu.edu/gentoo http ://gentoo.cites.uiuc.edu/pub/gentoo/ ftp://gentoo.cites.uiuc.edu/pub/gentoo/ " MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/di stfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages --filter=H_**/files/digest-*" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X acl acpi alsa arts berkdb bitmap-fonts branding cairo cdr cli cracklib cr ypt cups dbus dri dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode esd evo fam firefox flac fo rtran gdbm gif gpm gstreamer gtk hal iconv isdnlog java jpeg kde kerberos ldap m ad midi mikmod mng mp3 mpeg mudflap mysql ncurses nls nptl nptlonly ogg opengl o penmp oss pam pcre pdf perl png pppd python qt3 qt3support qt4 quicktime readlin e reflection samba sdl session spell spl ssl svg tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fon ts type1-fonts unicode vorbis win32codecs x86 xcomposite xml xorg xprint xv zlib " ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1 em u10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw as ym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" ELIBC="glibc" I NPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cf ontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARD S="nvidia" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGU AS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_ OVERLAY'

Not a perfect patch due to the design of rsync, but this is the least intrusive and should fix the issue as s-s-d does give some time allowance. Please test and report back.
