Yet another bugfix release from the Amarok cave to shorten the time until
Amarok 2.0 hits the earth. Our code monkeys have been working very hard to get
you an even more polished version of Amarok 'Fast Forward'. 
Amarok 1.4.7 includes an improved collection backend as well as a new icon
coloring provided by Pasi Lallinaho. The streams we provide got a cleanup to
give you the finest and coolest streams available. Of course we have also fixed
a bunch of bugs, even though our main focus has moved to Amarok 2.0
development.

 Upgraded SQLite to 3.4.1

 Copy, don't move items from Cool Streams to folders. (BR 147404) 
 Sometimes folders in the playlistbrowser could be lost. (BR 147404) 
 NJB devices could have tags corrupted that contained Unicode characters. Patch

 Show OSD when changing song rating via shortcut. Patch by Tuomas Nurmi

Steps to Reproduce:




As media-sound/amarok-1.4.7 requires now dev-db/sqlite-3.4.1 (still ~ on x86) a
dependency was added to the ebuild after bumping it.

Works fine so far.

As dev-db/sqlite-3.4.1 is ~ on all plattforms I think it's okay to set
amarok-1.4.7 ~ on all plattforms too.

2 quick notes to Elias:
 * You filled the bug the day after the amarok release. Very probably, the
package maintainer knew about it even before the actual release, and now is
testing the final version. See

(but plese don't feel discouraged to fill another bugs)
 * You added dependency on sqlite. AFAIK sqlite is shipped with Amarok and
gentoo currently uses the shipped one. (see gentoo amarok ChangeLog)

Oups, thanks for pointing this out. That's rather unusual, shipping a component
like sqlite with a package instead of defining it as dependency... but the
Amarok devs should know what they do, they probably have their reasons to do
this.

Because the maintainer is hospitalized and has much more important problems to
deal with than a subminor version bump, please chill out a bit. You can bump it
yourself in your overlay.

sqlite is bundled, as noted above. The shared one broke amarok recently again,
not going to use it.

First off, I hope the maintainer gets well soon. Secondly, I must say that some
of us, myself included don't understand the overlay process. Thirdly, it is yet
another example of the folly in giving all the responsibility of packages to a
single person. Fourthly, as a proud Gentoo user, perhaps I have unrealistically
come to expect the gentoo "team" to be on top of things and make sure things
are tested thoroughly before general release, (ie expat) not to mention, being
up to date. Telling people to chill out will not convert Windows users to the
world of Linux. A little more understanding on the part of the developers for
the needs of the average joe six pack user of Linux is in order, IMHO.

The overlay process is not connected in any way to the bumping of a package,
it's just for extending your 'official' portage tree by custom needs.

If a package is maintained by a herd, it's mostly ok to do the bump when a dev
is unavailable. As the update of amarok to 1.4.7 isn't that important it's IMHO
absolutely o.k. to wait until Diego is healthy again.

The libexpat thing was already discussed more than a year ago, but there wasn't
another way how to do the upgrade than forcing the users to do this heavy
'revdep-rebuild -X' stuff.

IMHO the target of Gentoo isn't converting Windows users to Gentoo, it's a
distribution for technically interested people and developers and IMHO not a
mainstream distribution like FedoraCore, OpenSuSE or Ubuntu.

Please don't understand this as an offence, I just wanted to express that I
fully understand how hard it is, keeping a project that large like Gentoo is,
up to date.

amarok is maintained by Diego Pettenò. It belongs to two herds, though - kde
and sound. Thus, there *are* several devs to take care of it and not just one.

We are. As was already pointed out to you, though, we do have priorities. We
have real bugs to take care of and make sure things go as smoothly as possible
for *all* our users. As far as I know, amarok-1.4.6 works fine.

1.4.7 is a sub-minor version bump and while many of us enjoy new versions as
much as any of our users, we prefer to test things thoroughly before we bump
them.

We're not missionaries. We're not out to "convert" people but to make things
work for our users and ourselves.

Actually, it would be really nice if that "joe user" showed "a little more
understanding" for the needs of the Gentoo developers. We're volunteers, we
have lives, we have families, we have jobs, we eat and we sleep. 

Yes, we know amarok-1.4.7 has been released and, yes, we will add it. We will
do it according to our own schedules and our own priorities, though.

That said, I'm currently emerging 128 packages to be able to test 1.4.7
thoroughly and add it to the tree. Not because of your nagging but in spite of
it.

Maybe an inapropriate place, but I already wanted to say this last week:

It may technically be inappropriate but I don't think any of us here minds a
single good wish (which is, undoubtedly, representative for many Gentoo/amarok
users). :-)

Anyway, I'Ve now bumped amarok to 1.4.7 in the tree. Have fun!

Thank you Wulf and hope Diego is doing better. One thing we need to remember
is, we are a family, and should care about each other.
