Please bump to snort 2.7 (released 12th July). New version contains various
bugfixes and speed improvements.

I added that last night, though I keep getting compile errors (thought it was
related to one box but seems it isnt)

Are you using amd64? 

Seems that mandriva cooker rpm uses a patch for amd64

You can check src.rpm (and its patches) in:
ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Linux/MandrivaLinux/devel/cooker/SRPMS/main/release/snort-2.7.0.1-2mdv2008.0.src.rpm
