the page says to do step 6, 7 and 9 to 17 this is wrong. if you do those steps you have a problem in step 9 as you have no gentoo commands. i have tried doing step 8 too(using a gentoo 1.2 stage1 tarball from the ix86 stage1 iso) but it gives an error but otherwise seem to work fine. but at step 11 it gives the same error again and won't continue. this was done on a pentium 3 450mhz with 640mb ram and 2gb swap, running mandrake 9.0 without any updates. all filesystems are ext2. the / partition is 10gb no /boot partition Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.follow all instructions down to the env-update command except not mounting a /boot partition, just creating the folder 2.run env-update, it gives an error about make.conf and suggest running emerge sync 3.run emerge sync, gives two errors 4.run env-update, gives correct output now 5.run emerge sync again, gives same error 6.follow instructions rest of the way 7.scripts/bootstrap.sh fails
Does anyone have any idea why the Alternative Installation Method How-To, after resizing the Linux partition to make room for Gentoo, recommends to follow http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml from steps 6 to 17, but skipping step 8? Is this an error?
Yes and no. You need step 8, but you may not follow it blindly, since it assumes you've booted from the gentoo cd, which you do not if you're following the alternative installation guide.
I'll take a look at this
Possible solution on http://cvs.gentoo.org/~swift/altinstall.html. If accepted by reviewing-committee, I'll commit it to cvs.
