Description Christian Apolloni 2003-03-09 18:47:54 UTC
Using xfree-4.3.0 and kde-3.1 with a Radeon Mobility M6 LY 16MB. To get DRI
working xfree-drm is needed, but using it's radeon.o causes the system to
freeze when logging out of KDM. The system shows only a blank screen and the
only thing possible is an hard reboot. Occasionally some files get corrupted (I
had to reconfigure mozilla 7 times for the corruption of it's configuration, and
the KDE menu once too). I'm using reiserfs.

This problem occours 100% of the times when logging out to log-in as different
user. Sometimes when shutting down or rebooting the problem doesn't occour. I
haven't found the possible cause of this apparently random behaviour.

Restoring the original DRM (provided with the kernel) solves that (but no DRI).

This problem seems unrelated with KDM or KDE, I experienced the freeze also with KDE, fluxbox and TWM using either KDM or XDM.
Also when switching to a console with i.e. [CTRL]+[ALT]+[F1] and stopping Xfree with /etc/init.d/xdm stop sometimes causes the freeze.
Killing Xfree with [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BKSP] seems safe, Xfree restarts correctly after going down.

Using xfree 4.3+nvidia (1.0.3123) driver I did certainly experience problems of the same type recently... Twice did I get a blank screen when switching from Xwindows to console or the other way around. (keyboard unresponsive too... I could only hard reset the pc)

(I own a geforce 2 mx 400)

I never experienced that problem before... Is xfree 4.3 the culprit ?
Comment 5 Christian Apolloni 2003-03-10 12:10:00 UTC
The problem appeared when I upgraded to xfree-4.2.99 and stuck with xfree-4.3.0, using the Xfree DRM.
Comment 6 Christian Apolloni 2003-03-19 08:28:28 UTC
I have this problem also with the 2.5.65 DRM.
Comment 7 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-03-21 02:07:42 UTC
The general feeling seems to be that 4.3.0 breaks DRI in many cases :( Lets
hope they can get it resolved soon.
Comment 8 Christian Apolloni 2003-03-31 10:27:01 UTC
This problem remains if using the 2.5.65 and 2.5.66 kernel DRM modules for my Radeon.
Comment 9 Christian Apolloni 2003-04-04 09:49:09 UTC
This thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=39804 shows that I'm not the only one. There's nothing to do? :(
Comment 10 Sami Nieminen 2003-04-12 18:29:11 UTC
I am experiencing the lockup with XFree 4.3.0-r2 + drm module from linux-2.5.67 also. I have
Radeon Mobility 9000. I keep kdm disabled for now.

BTW, my 'tilde' key does not work on XFree 4.3.0-r2, while it worked ok on 4.3.0-r1. This is with
Option "XkbModel" "pc105" and Option "XkbLayout" "fi".
Comment 11 Sami Nieminen 2003-04-14 11:49:42 UTC
The fix is here: http://bugs.xfree86.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=94

I just built 4.3.0-r2 with this patch included and the hang upon logout is gone.
Comment 12 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-14 16:33:46 UTC
the patch has been in there, actually, for a day now (patch_ver 1.0.8)
Comment 13 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-14 16:46:47 UTC
oops, I've had it in my loca ebuild and patch_Ver, sorry :/ I'm checking it in and sending the new patch set to the mirrors right now.
Comment 14 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-04-19 08:02:47 UTC
to be closed when xfree-4.3.0-r2 gets unmasked
Comment 15 Michael Fitzpatrick 2003-04-27 14:31:22 UTC

I experience the same problem with:

xfree-4.3.0-r3: /etc/X11/XF86Config Driver "radeon" (ATI Radeon Mobility 9200)

gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.1: no framebuffer, but module
kernel/drivers/char/drm/radeon.ko from DRI that comes with kernel.

kdm from KDE-3.1.5

I have set TerminateServer=true in group [X-*-Core] in file
/usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, to workaround the problem but it is not
always succesful.
