                Mandrake Linux Security Update Advisory
________________________________________________________________________

Package name: apcupsd
Advisory ID: MDKSA-2003:018
Date: February 18th, 2003

Affected versions: 8.1, 8.2, 9.0
________________________________________________________________________

Problem Description:

A remote root vulnerability in slave setups and some buffer overflows
in the network information server code were discovered by the apcupsd
developers. They have been fixed in the latest unstable version,
3.10.5 which contains additional enhancements like USB support, and
 the latest stable version, 3.8.6.

There are a few changes that need to be noted, such as the port has
changed from port 7000 to post 3551 for NIS, and the new config only
allows access from the localhost. Users may need to modify their
configuration files appropriately, depending upon their configuration.

Comment 1 Zach Welch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-19 16:40:19 UTC
As I was the one to submit a Gentoo patch upstream for apcupsd-3.10.1, I can
take care of updating the ebuild and testing it on my several UPSes.
Comment 2 Daniel Ahlberg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-20 11:56:08 UTC
okay, add the fixed ebuilds masked and I'll unmask them when I'm ready.
Comment 3 Zach Welch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-23 20:37:35 UTC
I have added an ebuild for 3.10.5, which covers that end. I will also be
adding a 3.8.6 ebuild to cover the other.
Comment 4 Zach Welch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-23 21:06:51 UTC
And after looking at 3.8.6, I strongly suggest we simply mark 3.10.5 as stable.
The new development branch has patches that would have to be developed again
for 3.8.6, and being the one that developed the original patches to fix
sandbox violations, I'm not really in the mood to do it for the older version.

I have been using 3.10.1 on several of my boxen here with no problems for
several months, and I see no strict need for the older version unless
someone really wants it bad - in which case they are welcome to develop a patch.
