Description georgia_tech_swagger 2007-01-03 12:45:03 UTC
I hang around both LinuxQuestions.org and the Gentoo forums quite a bit, but would love to see a subforum on LinuxQuestions.org for Gentoo. The LQ.org policy is to not allow for a distro subforum unless somebody related to that distro (dev) says it's ok. Bare minimum this is a great way to users to get support, and a way for others who otherwise might not be exposed to Gentoo to get a taste of it. Plus *alot* of people have asked Jeremy at LQ.org for a Gentoo subforum over the years.

I searched through all bugs old and new and didn't find anything about this, so my apologies if this has been brought up before.

Official LQ.org policy regarding distro subforums:

Adding forums leads to see if they want to participate
Comment 2 Kurt Lieber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-01-03 14:11:05 UTC
Previously, LQ had stated that they wouldn't create a sub-forum unless a Gentoo dev would actively participate in said forum. At the time, nobody felt inclined to do so. It sounds like that's no longer the case, which is good.

This isn't really a userrel issue. In fact, it's not really a Gentoo issue, period. If the person responsible for LQ wants to create a Gentoo sub-forum, s/he may certainly do so. We don't mind. The "official" Gentoo forums will continue to be at forums.gentoo.org, but that isn't to say other sites can't also have their own Gentoo-related discussion channels. We encourage folks to talk about Gentoo. :)

It says somebody who represents Gentoo (dev?) would still have to contact him and request it.

Here's a link to an email form at LQ to email Jeremy:

I don't see this potential fork in the Gentoo support base in a very good light at all. Existing Gentoo users know about the forums.
Potential users will discover Gentoo by word of mouth IRC or using Google. They will find both the main site and the forums that way.

I for one would not support Gentoo on LinuxQuestions.org. If it can be shown that a pool of untapped support resource exists, that could and would support Gentoo on LinuxQuestions.org then I'm marginally less against.

If it comes to a vote, I'm against.

If you can find a Gentoo Developer willing to support the opening of a forum on LinuxQuestions.org, then that is your task ;) I don't see how any of us can (or should) prevent that from occuring. I'm not sure if there are any developers in particular who are interested in doing so; but feel free to ask around.

As Roy said, i'm not sure how much sense forking the support resources may make and personally not a big fan of it, but i fully agree to Kurt's and Alec's comments. I don't think we are even in a position to decide whether LQ makes a Gentoo subforum as long they are able to fulfill their own policy (whatever that requires).
