While waiting for emerge --sync to finish, I got curious about the number of
patches distributed in the portage tree itself.

In the portage tree there are ~8300 patches inside 'files' dirs (*.patch). They
sum up to ~15 MiB (du -b) or ~38 MiB (du -c), it depends on your filesystem.
This means that 7% of the files in portage are patches and between 5% and 7% of
the size of the portage tree is due to patches.

Anyway, I am not suggesting you to remove patches from the various 'files'
dirs, I just wonder if you know that the number of patches in portage is that
big.
