A new Syslinux version was released the new uses mtools and is no longer setuid.
The release notes on freshmeat claim security fix.

Tried making a new ebuild for this bumping the version. Didn't work when I tried it the file syslinux-2.02.tar.bz2 came back rejected by bzip2. Not a bzip file.

Removed the source and tried again. Still no luck.
