Would you post the output of "emerge --info"?

Alternative patch

This (smaller) patch was also found on http://bugs.bitlbee.org/bitlbee/ticket/88

I've tested the patch as an ebuild in my local overlay and confirmed it works and fixes the problem for net-im/bitlbee-1.1 on both x86 and amd64.
