During instalation it crashes with:

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables PANEL_APPLET_CFLAGS
and PANEL_APPLET_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.

I found, that configure should be runned with parameter:
--without-gnome 
when there should be gnome not compiled in.

fixed InCVS. I need to take a look at the notification area soon.
