Description dan 2003-02-07 13:10:35 UTC
xfree 4.2.99.4 seems like it's starting up fine, but freezes with the nvidia logo. No hint of anything going wrong in the log. Oh, it's a hard freeze of course as typical of xfree and the keyboard no longer works. Have even tried emerging with no cflags. Also it sometimes missbehaves and spits out whacko logs or cfg files all over the place.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Just by starting xfree
2.
3.

Also I am having similar problems that are *really* annoying. The lockups started just before Xfree 4.2.99.4 upgrade and actually seem to have something to do with an xfree memory leak that causes my system to go haywire. Xfree locks for me (with nvidia driver) when switching between vconsoles to x with ctrl-alt-F keys. I had these problems in the past to the point where I got a new video card. Then I retried my Nvidia card and they went away. I have these problems with a TNT2 and a Geforce2 mx/400 .. If anything, it's the driver/xfree that is the source of problems.

which version of nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel are you using?
Comment 3 dan 2003-02-07 16:35:21 UTC
well I have never had any problems before xfree 4.2.99.4, I was using xfree 4.2.1-r2. I'm using the latest nvidia-kernel and glx.
Comment 4 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-07 16:42:56 UTC
you're using 4191 of nvidia? versions, baby, versions. When you get asked which one, we invariably mean, which version in portage...
Comment 5 dan 2003-02-07 21:09:09 UTC
1.0.4191-r1
Comment 6 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-09 06:08:42 UTC
ok, that version of the driver is buggy. Please revert back to the 3x series of the driver.
Comment 7 dan 2003-02-09 19:19:07 UTC
it's not the driver. I tried using the nv driver instead of nvidia and it still freezes, just with no nvidia
logo.
Also sometimes xfree 4.2.99.4 missbehaves and spits all sorts of junk into the logfile, and spits out
cfg files all over the place (in the home dir of whatever user ran it or in /etc/X11/)

Same problem here. I have the nvidia-Logo disabled, the last thing I see is the screen flickering and then staying black (but not off). It happens instead of showing the gray background of X.

I use XFree 4.2.99, tested nvidia-kernel-1.0.4191-r1, nvidia-kernel-1.0.3123-r2 and even the 'nv' driver of XFree, same result.

What's annoying is the total lack of log-output, neither in XFree.0.log, nor in /var/log/messages or anywhere else.

I'm reverting to XFree 4.2.1 now.

BTW: How can I gain controll over my computer, when X hangs like this? Keyboard is disabled, I need to login remote. But even when I kill X and gdm, still no Konsole appears on my screen.
Comment 9 dan 2003-02-14 21:24:30 UTC
Yes cristoph! that is exactly what happens to me. I have also tested all versions
of nvidia drivers and 'nv'.
I do however get logs, but they just dont have any hint of an error. Ill post one
as an attach.

xfree 4.2.99.4 log

This is the log from the new xfree86 4.2.99.4
Comment 11 Eric 2003-02-21 06:25:24 UTC
Exactly the same problem here

Not Just Nvidia either, I tried it with an ATI Radeon 7200 64mb DDR
Same problem blank screen, messed up XFree86.0.logs

Can anyone confirm that reverting back to older XFree fixes the problem ?

Comment 12 Eric 2003-02-21 18:59:48 UTC
I can confirm that unmerging Xfree 4.2.99.4 and then merging Xfree4.2.1-r2 solved my problem all works fine now

Hate to say it guys but something must be bad in Xfree 4.2.99.4 as it seems a bit odd that it all works fine on older xfree drivers but not on Xfree 4.2.99.4

This is all with the new nvidia 4191 drivers
Comment 13 dan 2003-02-25 12:30:50 UTC
OK! I am happy.
I've just installed xfree 4.2.99.902 and it works!
just to be a bore i tried 4.2.99.4 again, and it still doesn't work. That's just to show that 4.2.99.4 is a
*bad* version for me.

Comment 14 Dead Schorsch 2003-02-26 04:19:55 UTC
I can confirm that. XFree .902 solves the problem.
Comment 15 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-02-26 04:36:57 UTC
closing as the latest 4.2.99 seems to solve this
