I suspect it is that gcc-4 does not have the fwritable-strings option. although
I have not confirmed it (mostly because I am not sure how). It used to compile
fine on gcc-3.4.6 but I don't have gcc-3 installed anymore.

This has been package.masked for gnome-1 removal -> WONTFIX.
