I too had this problem, looks like automake-1.4 needs to be a dep of gtk. I did
emerge =sys-devel/automake-1.4* and then emerged gtk without problem.

Yup, same solution, but it should be in the ebuild.

Same here, x11-libs/gtk+-1.2.10-r12 does not seem to pull in the correct
automake version (1.4).

After manually emergeing =sys-devel/automake-1.4_p6 it has now started
compiling.

The ebuild seems to be missing the following line:

export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.4

WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.4 added before inherit autotools.
