on an ~x86 system:

cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-pointer-sign"

the CFLAGS are defined in Makefile.common and apparently make.conf CFLAGS are
ignored.

Then, if that is addressed, there is an error about version.h not existing.

In fact, it's the other way round. You apparently have not switched to gcc-4.x
