It happens at least once a day while the yakuake console is hiding or showing. Reproduced on more than one machine on x86 and AMD64 with nvidia-drivers. No error report - dies instantly. Composite works completely stable otherwise. The problem only appears while drawing the console sliding up or down. =============== Portage 2.1.1 (default-linux/amd64/2006.0, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4.90.20060805-r1, 2.6.18-rc4-viper x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.18-rc4-viper x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.12.4 Last Sync: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 06:20:01 +0000 app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r3 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.60 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17.50.0.3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r3 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.16 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-Os -pipe -march=k8" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/java-config/vms/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-Os -pipe -march=k8" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gentoo.itdnet.net/gentoo" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--enable-new-dtags -Wl,--sort-common -s -Wl,--hash-style=both" LINGUAS="en" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/portage/local /usr/portage/local/layman /usr/portage/local/layman/toolchain_overlay /usr/portage/local/layman/toolchain_overlay" SYNC="rsync://gentoo.itdnet.net/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 3dnowex 7zip X a52 aac acpi aim alsa amarok asf avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bluetooth browserplugin bzip2 cdda cddb cdr cdrom cli crypt css cups cvs dbus dlloader dri dvd dvdr dvdread dvr eds elibc_glibc emboss emul-linux-x86 encode exif fam fbcon firefox flac font-server foomaticdb ftp gif gimp glibc-omitfp gmail gmp gphoto2 gpm gtk2 hal hashstyle icq imap imlib input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse isdnlog jabber java javascript jikes jpeg jpeg2k kde kdehiddenvisibility kernel_linux linguas_en lm_sensors logrotate lua lzw lzw-tiff matroska mime mmap mp3 mpeg msn musicbrainz ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin ntfs nvidia nvidis offensive ogg openal opengl openssh pam pascal pcre pdf pdflib perl png ppds pppd python qt3 quicktime readline reflection scanner sdl sensord session spell spl sqlite ssl subtitles subversion svg tcl tcpd theora tiff tk truetype truetype-fonts type1 type1-fonts udev unicode usb userland_GNU vcd video_cards_nv video_cards_nvidia visualization vorbis wma xcomposite xine xorg xpm xprint xscreensaver xv xvid xvmc yahoo zlib" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
Moving to X11, but I suppose the nvidia-driver thing will mean this bug will never be fixed.
...or it might be already. Can you try using the 9625 or 9626 masked BETA drivers instead?

I'm not using nvidia driver, but I have composite enabled and I'm using Beryl on an old ATI 7200 with opensource drivers and have a very similar problem. If Yakuake is doing anything processor intensive, it crashes and burns if I check up on it too often. If animations are becoming shaky, opening and closing Yakuake may or may not cause a crash. It seems to be very random, but always happens when the system is under too much load. This hasn't happened when I wasn't using Yakuake.
