WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.9.6 is not valid. It's also kinda redundant, as automake-1.9 is
the default. Versions honored by automake-wrapper are

vers="1.9 1.8 1.7 1.6 1.5 1.4"
</snip>

(see /usr/lib/misc/am-wrapper.sh).
