Description:   Opened: 2006-06-12 15:28 0000 
mplayer-1.0.20060415 ebuild is considered newer than mplayer-1.0_pre8 by
portage,
but it is older and effectively blocks from upgrade to mplayer-1.0_pre8.

mplayer versioning should be somehow changed because there is no information
about what is newer: 1.0.YYYMMDD or 1.0_preX builds. In fact:

1.0_pre8 > 1.0.20060415 > ... > 1.0_pre7-r1

...and there would probably come some new 1.0.YYYYMMDD versions in future
which should be considered newer than 1.0_pre8.

I suggest something like renaming 1.0.20060415 to 1.0_pre7.20060415 and future
builds before pre9 name mplayer-1.0_pre8.YYYYMMDD (if it is possible)

or convert all 1.0_preX versions to 1.0.YYYYMMDD_preX with respective date
otherwise...

I found the same here, when I specified what to emerge, it was noted, that
_pre8 is a downgrade compared to 20060415.
