www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r4 compiles and runs perfectly on my alpha.
Please add the ~alpha keyword.

------- Comment #1 From Fernando J. Pereda (RETIRED) 2006-04-04 08:20:29 0000 -------
We are having problems running firefox-1.5 on Alpha (namely, it doesn't run).
Can you please post your 'emerge --info' ?

Cheers,
Ferdy

I tried emerge'ing mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-r4 with USE="gnome ipv6 -debug
-mozdevelop -xinerama -xprint" and got the following message...

Updating firefox chrome registry...
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 590: regchrome: command not found
E: regchrome exited with status: 127
E: //usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/extensions/installed-extensions.txt still present
E: Registration might have gone wrong

When I tried actually running firefox from a gnome-terminal, the main window
never came up. It just said the usual no running windows found stuff and then
nothing happened. Even after hitting ctrl+c there were still processes running.
Would the warning above have anything to do with it?

No this is due from uninstall of 1.0.x nothing to be alarmed by. strace
/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/firefox-bin and send it to me via email please.

mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.2.strace

mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.2 has the same problems, 100% CPU usage and the browser
window never comes up. I attached the stace this time in case other people are
interested in helping solve the problem.

Anarchy thought it might not have worked for me because I had -nptl -nptlonly,
so I tried it on a +nptl +nptlonly system. The results were the same, high CPU
usage and no windows ever came up. I won't be able to test +nptl -nptlonly as
it causes problems on alpha (See bug #119154).

I have the exact same symptons with mozilla-firefox-1.0.8 now, don't think I've
upgraded this package to get these symptoms, could it be something else?

This is looking more like a bug in gtk+ and not mozilla itself. could someone
maybe try a 2.6.x version of gtk+2?

I tried downgrading to x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.17, to no avail. Then downgraded to
x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.12, but had to take a train before the merge was finished.
Remote testing of firefox DOES work now however. I hope xfwm works again also
(stopped working at about the same time).
Will test further upon request :)

when you can test further please do locally. If this is resolved downgrading
gtk then we know you all have a gtk issue in the alpha world and not a mozilla
issue at all. Thanks and keep me posted.

After upgrading again to gtk+-2.8.19, I am sorry to see using firefox remotely
still works. As such my test was inconclusive. And I won't be able to test
locally for almost two weeks, I'm afraid :( Any other alpha-er willing to test
this?

Reinstalled x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.12, firefox now seems to run locally as well.

firefox-1.5.0.4 dep list for alpha stable

I tried emerge'ing firefox-1.5.0.4 on a stable system with gtk+-2.8.12 and
still get the same problem, 100% CPU usage and no window coming up. I've
attached the output of `emerge -evp mozilla-firefox` which shows all of the
dependencies, their versions and use flags.

I just managed to get mozilla-firefox-1.5.04 working on the alpha by upgrading
to gcc-4.1.1 and glibc-2.4 (I experienced the same hang on startup as described
in previous posts). Might be a little extreme, but it also fixes bug 133748.

------- Comment #20 From Eric Nichols 2006-07-06 06:26:46 0000 -------
Well, I don't really get what the problem is still because I can't reproduce
it. I have upgraded my system a lot recently including upgrading to FireFox
1.5.0.4.

Everything still compiles and runs perfectly the same way it did when I started
this a long time ago and I'm posting this comment from my alpha right now ;)

So yeah, I'm having no problem with 1.5.0.4

Here is my latest emerge --info:

I noticed gcc-3.3.2 in Comment #20, so I switched compilers and recompiled
firefox-1.5.0.4 and its dependencies with gcc-3.3.2. firefox-1.5.0.4 runs fine
now. Also, comment #19 mentions firefox-1.5.0.4 working when compiled with
gcc-4.1.1. Since the only thing I changed was the gcc version, I'm assuming
this is a gcc-3.4 issue. I think we should be able to re-keyword firefox once
gcc-4.1.1 hits ~alpha.

Eric and Mike, thank you very much for posting your `emerge --info` as it has
helped narrow down the problem.
