I tested this on alpha and x86. I ran into the following problems on both
systems...

plaympeg detects, but doesn't play correctly mp2 files. I attached a sample mp2
file that works fine in mplayer. With plaympeg and gtv it sounds like a bunch
of short beeps at different pitches.

Attempting to play an mp4 file causes a Floating Point Exception

The progress slider in gtv doesn't work. I can't skip to a particular part of
the video or song. Additionally, moving it to a lot different positions while
playing/pausing/unpausing causes it to crash.

I still have the same problems with smpeg-0.4.4-r6.
