I tried both 20050502 and 20050624 versions of fontforge, and this is what I get when I run it: $ fontforge Copyright (c) 2000-2005 by George Williams. Executable based on sources from 12:40 24-Jun-2005. Internal Error: I can't figure out your version of iconv(). I need a name for the UCS2 encoding and I can't find one. Reconfigure --without-iconv. Bye.
I tried building the lates fontforge (20060209) from source, and that also gives me the same result. This is the version of glibc I'm running: sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5-r2 -build -erandom -glibc-compat20 -glibc-omitfp -hardened -linuxthreads-tls (-multilib) +nls +nptl +nptlonly -pic -profile (-selinux) +userlocales
you could try fontforge-20060406
I get a similar error with that version as well: $ fontforge Copyright (c) 2000-2006 by George Williams. Executable based on sources from 20:17 6-Apr-2006-ML. Internal Error: I can't figure out your version of iconv(). I need a name for the UCS2 encoding and I can't find one. Reconfigure --without-iconv. Bye.
I would like to know if anyone actually ran fontforge (any version) on amd64.

Instead of the proposed fix to configure FF using --without-iconv, glibc should be fixed as per this bug #131386
media-gfx/fontforge-20060408 has this fixed
